Flat Aggie visits our Manitoba Beef Farm

My name is Ashley Nelson and I am a beef farmer. Along with my husband, Corey, our three children and my mother and father-in-law we breed and raise beef cattle at Austin, Manitoba, Canada. This year we are calving out about 210 commercial Angus/Hereford & Simmental cows. The heifers, which are first time Mommas, started calving January 12 and the cows started the middle of February. In addition to the cows we also grow several different crops including wheat, barley, oats, canola, sunflowers, silage corn, alfalfa and millet. There is also a separate herd of cows that we calve in the fall, usually starting in August. (I will only be talking about our spring calving cows for now) We mostly use Simmental bulls with the odd Hereford or Angus for heifers.

Here is Flat Aggie pictured with an alfalfa hay bale. Alfalfa is part of our cows diet along with silage corn.

When we start calving it is quite cold here in Manitoba. It is not unusual to have temperatures dip down to -30C (-22F) and even colder with the wind. So it is very important to keep a close eye on the cows we know are close to calving. We have a barn that we fill every night with cows we think are close and then a couple different pens outside with loose housing sheds to block the wind for the rest. With cold temperatures like this the cows need to be checked every couple hours night and day. A calf being born in the extreme cold could mean they freeze their ears and tails or possibly not survive at all.

Flat Aggie is in the barn with a couple of cows and their calves. We have quite a few maternity pens that we can keep cows and their calves penned separate from other cows and also to assist in the birthing process if necessary. It is important to keep clean, dry bedding in the barn for them.

Checking out some cows outside, you can see in the background one of the loose housing sheds the cows use for shelter from the weather.

The cows depend on us to feed and bed them every morning all winter long. Like I said, they get alfalfa hay with a corn silage ration. We add to the corn silage, vitamins and shredded straw. The vitamins are very important for the cows when it comes to having their calves and looking after them as well. Helps to keep them healthy.

Flat Aggie just had to check out the silage wagon! This wagon has a scale on it so we can give the cows exactly what they need for feed. I mentioned before that we add vitamins and straw. This wagon also mixes it altogether.

We used this tractor and bale shredder (processor) to feed the cows bales in their feeders and shred straw for them to lay on and stay warm. Can you see where Flat Aggie is?

After the calves are born, they are tagged with dangle tags so that we know which cow they belong to and they are also tagged with an CCIA tag (Canadian Cattle Identification Agency) so that they can be traced back to where they were born after they have left the farm. We also give them needles for vitamins and for common diseases such as Pneumonia, that could make them really sick or cause them to die.

Flat Aggie is assisting with the tagging process. We like to use this little calf chute so that the whole process is safer for the baby calves and us as well. Their mommas are VERY protective and can be dangerous.
The blue and green tags are dangle tags and the yellow button looking tags are called CCIA tags.

Beef calves are mainly used for their meat, eg. hamburger, roasts, steak etc. Meat is not the only piece of the bovine (cattle) that is used. Their skin, brain, fat, hooves/horns, bones, blood, internal organs, milk and manure are all used for many different products.

Our baby calves will stay with their Momma till about October when they are weaned and are either taken to the Auction Mart or sold directly to a feedlot.

Hope you enjoyed the tour of our farm, we were so glad to host Flat Aggie. I know my oldest two, Tanner and Ali really enjoyed taking him around the farm and teaching him what it was all about.

Have a great day!

Calving Update & a Hamburger Recipe

We have been really busy!! We are in full swing calving right now and of course the majority come in the middle of the night. We've been having upwards of 5 and 6 calves in the night. And even though we lose sleep and are tied to the farm for weeks...calving really is one of our favorite times of the year. I am feeling a little left out this year! Having a newborn and temperatures of -20 and -30 make it pretty much impossible to get out to the barn with the kids. I have got out to the barn two times with Whitley.

We've also been shipping grain. Our sunflowers are all gone, our canola is gone and most of our oats. Still one more load to go. Unfortunately it's that time of year that the big bills are due....

Other than that we have not been up to much. Just enjoying my kids and hibernating. And drinking lots of coffee of course!

Here is a recipe that we had for supper last night. I definitely went on the make again list!! Everyone loved it. The best part is it's a hamburger recipe and there's certainly no shortage of hamburger around here!

Barbecued Hamburgers

Hamburgers:
1.5 lb ground beef
2 eggs
1 cup oatmeal
salt/pepper
3 squirts Worcestershire sauce
Fry hamburgers.

Sauce:
1.5 cups ketchup
1.5 cups water
2 tbsp cornstarch
4 tbsp brown sugar
2 tbsp soya sauce
1.25 cups onions, diced

Combine cornstarch and water. Mix other ingredients and bring to a boil. Add cornstarch mixture. Bring to a boil and pour over hamburgers in a casserole dish. Bake for ~ 45 minutes at 350. Serve with mashed potatoes. (or tater tots if your lazy like me)

These were SUPER yummy!! I don't really care for fried hamburgers...prefer them on the BBQ. But these were just delicious, you have to try them. I omitted the onions and I actually used 2 lb of burger. I also halved the recipe and put one half in the freezer for another day!

My lifeline these days. Can hardly wait to get out on the verandah to drink it.
 Sunflowers leaving.
 7 weeks old here.

 Tummy time.
 All snuggled in <3
Our basement is now 100% kid zone......it's so awesome for them to have this space now.
My farm kiddos!

Have a great day!!!!!!!!!!

First coffee on the verandah for 2014!!!!!!!!!!

I was sooooooooooooooooo excited to have coffee on the verandah this morning and then we couldn't resist and we had to have another one after lunch. The sunshine was just so wonderful. Feels great after a long winter!!!

Miss Ali just loving the outdoors!!! My hubby went to a sale today and bought a purebred black simmental bull and heifer...........................and since it was a nice little hit on the pocket book I told him he would have to make himself a little bed beside the heifer in the barn and sleep with her to make sure nothing happens to her...lol. So needless to say, there will be no new babies in our family for quite a little while ;) ha ha. And while he was out gallivanting I had to help my father-in-law pull two calves today. Both alive and well!

Today I semi-cleaned my van, washed all our bedding, made a huge 14x14 chocolate cake, made cinnamon buns, hung curtains in all but 1 bedroom and run to town for groceries and etc. Looking forward to going to my Grandma's tonight to have a visit and pick up some things I need for our supper next wknd.

Have a great rest of your weekend!

A helping hand

I had the pleasure of helping this big white elephant get going on the first few hours of his life tonight. He's a big calf and his momma is short on milk. So he's got a few things going against him but he was more than willing to try. As I was trying to help him keep the tit in his mouth, I actually couldn't help but sympathize with him and his momma. I was remembering when we brought our first-born home and struggles I had learning to nurse my baby. Now most women in this world would be offended to be compared to a cow.

But in all reality, we're not so different from eachother are we? Just mommas trying to do the best we can for our babes.

And sometimes we all can use a helping hand.

Calving Season

Other than harvest, calving is my favorite time of the year. We've got about 125/200+ calves on the ground. Let's hope the warm weather keeps coming and the pneumonia and scours stay away!! On the weekends the kids and I are usually outside right in midst of everything. In the tractors, barn and cow pens (safely of course). This is our 'family time' if you will. I'm so glad we can provide our kids with this lifestyle. I can't say enough about how important It is.

Also, we've got baby kitties in the barn! So fuzzy and cute. The kids are enjoying them.

Happy Monday!!

Twins & then twins again!!

Two more sets of twins! Both yesterday. One set was even out of a first calf heifer.

On another note I'm soooo very glad it's Friday. We've been fighting head colds and last night Miss Ali decided to not sleep for half the night. Daddy is supposed to play in a hockey tournament this wknd so we'll watch some hockey, work on income tax, laundry and hopefully scrap-booking. Plus a birthday supper tonight for my Grandma who turned 71 yesterday!

Have a good day.

Frosty but beautiful sunrises

-Sunrises are one of the many great things about checking cows. It's just been so bitterly cold this past week (-36 with winchills in the -50s) that we've been walking through the cows at least every two hours. The father-in-law was away this wknd so it was up to the hubby and I. I actually quite enjoying doing it. (once you get past the waking up at two or four or whatever time it is) And another exciting thing that happened (which the sunrise reminded me of this morning bc it's new every day) was that we had a new baby cousin born yesterday!! Little girl, can hardly wait to meet her!

Anyways, stay positive!! And have a spectacular day!

This, that and the other.

These pictures are in no particular order. We are very close to being done the drywall! We should be ready for the mud and tapers on Tuesday! Very exciting.
Our nephew Landen was at Grandma and Grandpa's for a night this weekend and these two had soooooo much fun together. They played in the snow, went for a ski-doo ride, went to the cabin and had cheezies and gummy bears and hauled bales. Tanner basically outside from 11 AM to 5 PM yesterday, needless to say he was in bed and sleeping by 7:30 PM!
Landen was such a trooper, he pulled Tanner in the wagon and the sled the whole time. Tanner tried to pull Landen but he is just not strong enough yet!

Our entrance way stairs going up to the kitchen. My plan is to stain them.
Today we got together with my F family for Grandma's 70th Birthday! It's actually not till Wednesday. My cousin Jessie made the cake, it was soooooo tasty and beautifully decorated. (Can you tell she works at a Bake shop??)

Tanner helping Daddy bottle feed a little baby tonight. Her Momma had twins and only wanted one of them :( Hopefully we will find a Momma for her soon.
Here is Ali with Jessie at Grandma's party. We had sooooo many laughs tonight, only with family do you come across such hilarious topics of conversation and have the same dumb sense of humor! I love it. Good times.

Anywho, I was waiting for my babe to wake up bc I thought she would want to eat...I'll probably end up just laying down and she will wake up! Story of my life :) Have a great night!

Checking cows a Family affair

Off to the barn we go!
Our newly acquired orphan. Of course Tanner had his eyes closed for this cute picture.
Even though it's only like -2 Tanner insisted on wearing his 'carf. I love how he leaves out the 's' sound. ('poon is my favorite he he)
His new Momma! She seemed to quite like him. My Hubby was trying to find a lot of patience at this point...I probably should of let him hold Ali and take over. But as soon as Hubby left him alone and did something else he went to it like a champ!
 My babe and moi.
The newest addition on the farm. Although there could be a newer one since then as this was a couple hours ago. We have had 20+ calves in the last couple of days.
In every picture here Ali's expression is,"I do not know these people, I do not belong to this family"! lol.

Brandy and Troop. Calving, their favorite time of the year...yuck. Need I say more?
Always got to be feeding those cows. If he is a cattle farmer he will most definitely have fat cows!
The fresh air was spectacular! I sure hope the -30 crap is GONE for good. It's fun when we can all go out together. Next winter should interesting when both kids want to do chores with Daddy! We probably have about 70 calves so that means we are about 1/3 done.

Well I am doing pretty good to have two posts in one day!
Have a great night!
