Thanksgiving 2013
This was a much anticipated weekend for me (us). I feel like my husband and I have both been going opposite for a few weeks now. We both get up around the same time usually and then we haven't really been seeing him till 9 or 10 at night. So I have been eagerly awaiting this weekend and even more so the moment I knew the crop was complete. It has been great. Friday night we went to a wedding in town here, it was beautiful! Although it was supposed to be outside it got moved indoors bc of the rain. Here's Ali all dolled up for the Wedding.
Saturday I puttered away with odd jobs and then went to my brothers for his birthday cake. He turns 25 on Tuesday. I really enjoyed hanging out with my family. Sunday we actually had two family gatherings to be at for lunch, so we chose my side this time. Can't be everywhere! It was in my Aunt and Uncles barn and it was beautifully decorated!!!
Had Dad over for supper and he even brought a saskatoon pie for dessert! Mmmmmmm. Today we got a lot of odd jobs done around home that have been on the to-do list awhile. One of them being digging up and bagging all our potatoes that we planted at my Dad's place. When all was said and done we probably have about 15 sacks. Dad kept some for himself as well. Needless to say, I don't think we will be buying any this winter ;)
Tanner was a great little helper when it came to bagging the potatoes. He loves to help (for now anyways).
All in all we had a spectacular weekend and I have been savoring every moment. I am sooooo Thankful for my Husband, my children, all our family, our health, our home, our lifestyle, our friends and so so so much more. We are so blessed.

Trying to beat the rain
The last couple of days have been quite the rat race. With the looming forecast of rain for tomorrow and the fact that the forecast has said rain for two weeks has us all running around like rats. Last night we finally the in-laws oats done with neighbors help. We had two combines, three grain trucks, a baler and a swather rolling in the fields yesterday! I drove the kids down to see the commotion and to get some pictures (although it was too dark for that -- crazy! And it was only 730) and it was a little overwhelming to see all the help we had. It is so appreciated and the road is well traveled both directions. We try to help out whenever we can too.
Today we have cattle coming home from PFRA and we are working on combining our oats. We have hired an extra combine with a straight cut header since not all our oats are swathed yet. They should be done soon.
Not only were we trying to beat this rain tomorrow, Corey's parents are wanting to head out to Alberta right after a wedding we have tomorrow night. If there was still crop on the ground, they most likely would not of been going. Plus its Thanksgiving this wknd!!!!!! I'm so looking forward to having my hubby come inside for the night sooner than 9 or 10 at night! And the good food to come on Sunday :)

Fruit Flies
So I feel like blogging, but I really don't know what to blog about. So I will write about something that I have been frustrated at all summer long!!! FRUIT FLIES! Me and the rest of the world I think. Everyone I talk to seem to have the same problem. I have been trying to keep my dishes and scrap pails under control but it doesn't seem to help! And instead of finding them on my fruit and veggies, they are on and into anything else you can imagine. I make buns and they are under my plastic and tea towel stuck in them while they are trying to rise. In my bags of bought bread so I now put them in the fridge. I find them buzzing around in my bathroom for goodness sake!!!!!!
So I decided to Google them. And this is what I learned. Although it still doesn't really explain why they are so ridiculous!
Places Fruit Flies can breed/lay eggs:
-In your dish rags and mop heads
-In your sink drains
-In your garbage and recycling cans
-If you have a cold storage room or a place you keep canning, if you have any that are unsealed they are there like white on rice
-On any fermenting aging piece of fruit or veggies
-Any place in your home that is dirty or where you may have dropped food
Interesting tidbits:
-They can smell fermenting fruit and veggies from a great distance
-They can come into your home on your groceries from the store, on yourself or through your window screens and cracks around your doors
-It takes them 8 days to go from an egg to an adult fruit fly
-Each time a female fruit fly lays a new batch of eggs she can lay up to 500-1000 eggs (No wonder!!!!!!!!)
-They do not need fruit to keep reproducing
How to try and get rid of them:
-Put some Apple Cider Vinegar in a cup with some dish detergent, set it on the counter and watch them come (this has worked the best for me, all summer I just kept one on my counter. Now I feel like it's the reason they are in my kitchen......it seems to have a constant cloud of flies around it all the time)
-Put a piece of ripe banana in a cup, cover with saran wrap and poke holes in it with a toothpick, they can get in but can't get out)
-Pour some bleach down your drains
-Even just pouring hot water down your drains a few times a day will help, it will keep the eggs from transitioning to larvae or from larvae to flies
-If anyone else has some solutions, please leave a comment below!!

Chopping silage, trucking silage, packing silage; repeat!
We started chopping our corn silage last Friday, and we are still chopping corn. Unfortunately the machine is most likely on its last leg and has been giving us lots of grief. Not to mention, we measured a stalk on the field we are on and it is 14 feet tall. Taller than the exhaust on the tractor!! So it's no small feat for that machine to put it through! It's the best corn we've grown. Other than that the mother-in-law and I have been taking turns feeding the extra mouths and I've been wiping bums and faces as per usual. As much as we love this time of year around here, I think it's safe to say we are ready for harvest to be wrapped up. Still trying to get our millet baled and oats combined. (not sure how with the daily rains we get)
